Jim Lees Versus Samuel K Vincent
A number of systems have been proposed which seek to map the English Alphabet to their numerical equivalents. These have been arrived at through the attempt to decipher a sequence of letters found in the Book of the Law:
"4 6 3 8 A B K 2 4 A L G M O R 3 Y X 24 89 R P S T O V A L.”
Crowley, Aleister. ''The Book of the Law'', II,76
Among these we are a system of Hermetic Qabalah invented by Jim Lees . You also have David Cherubim's ''The Key of it All'' (1996), some others and finally we have Samuel K. Vincent's The English Qabalah with a mystical and numerical concordance for the Roman Script Glyph Set.
David Cherubim takes the letters in their order in the alphabet and increments them according to this order by multiples of 6. Mr. Lee’s systems adopts some arbitrary method based on a misapplication of basic algebra. Both systems fail to convince the reader by their results. the nonsensical results of the application of this key confirm the nonsense of their system.
Mr. Vincent’s work however is different. Not only due to the results of the Key’s application speak for themselves, but he develops a cogent and coherent system based on the English Alphabet Glyphs which constitutes the birth of English Qabalah.
Samuel K. Vincent's System
Order and Value
Samuel K. Vincent develops the new Aeon mapping of the Roman Scripts by utilising the known formulae, as well as those keys found in the ''The Book of the Law'', II,76 by showing how the equivalences hold in both the old Aeons mappings as well as in the New Aeon mappings. Each of the Symbols in the verse are deconstructed to their elemental set in the old Aeon Key before transitioning. In his book, ''The English Qabalah'' he writes,
“We Understand that any new Law or Key must fulfill the old Law in a very similar way that Quantum Mechanics must contain and further explain Newtonian Physics: The truth unfolds; it is never displaced. This new Key must be a development of the systems we’ve known to date. It will find its birth precisely at the point where the old system breaks down.
Vincent, Samuel K. (2007) Symposium IV, The English Qabalah
Mr. Vincent also claims that errors have been made in assuming the typesets for the print of this text. He provides corrections to the interpretation of the glyphs contained in the verse:
“The editors in the process of typesetting have made assumptions. For instance, the eighth character has been established as the numeral “2” ever since the book was first printed. There has never been any question made of this. However it might just as easily be the letter “z”. More grieving still, some of the characters are not letters at all, though they have been printed as such. Among these we note the 12th position which editors give as G, and the 17th which is given as Y.
In reality, the former is the sign of the failure of the squaring of the circle mentioned: “then this circle squared in its failure is a key also.” – Liber Al, 3, 47. × is not a multiplication sign as some have suggested, nor the letter X as others have; but the male half of the squaring of the circle the symbol of which is: as shown in the text, which in its two variant forms lead to the success or failure of this squaring.
The remaining characters are symbols that the Student will recognize. Some are numbers, some are letters. The nineteenth and twentieth figures appear with arcs drawn above and below them suggesting a reversal of digits. Vincent, Samuel K. (2008)
Mr. Lee's Systems
Order and Value
Jim Lees arrives at the ''order & value'' of the letters by superimposing on one of the pages of manuscript of Liber AL on which this verse appears (sheet 16 of Chapter III). Also appearing on this page are a diagonal line and a circled cross. Smith continues with her explanation:
“There are letters along the top of the page, and it would seem to be obvious to continue with the alphabet in the manner indicated, but the clue is in the numbers down the side. A is written instead of 1 which suggests that B is 2, C 3 and so on. Fill in all the squares on the grid in this manner, repeating the alphabet when one gets to Z. To proceed to the next step the instruction is written on the page, for those who have eyes to see. 'Then this line drawn is a key.' The line drawn is a diagonal line across the page. If one reads any diagonal across the square one gets the order of the English alphabet to be used in the English Qabala. Whichever diagonal is read the order of the letters is obtained. There is only one order which can be obtained and all 26 letters appear in this order.”
“As there are ten squares per column, this method is equivalent to taking every eleventh letter of the alphabet as the ''order'' and then assigning them sequential ''values'' "
This is kind of nonsense is almost laughable.
Here’s what they come up with.
A=1 L=2 W=3 H=4 S=5 D=6 O=7 Z=8 K=9 V=10 G=11 R=12 C=13
N=14 Y=15 J=16 U=17 F=18 Q=19 B=20 M=21 X=22 I=23 T=24 E=25 P=26
According to Jake Stratton-Kent, "the English Qabala is a qabalah and not a system of numerology. A qabalah is specifically related to three factors: one, a language; two, a 'holy' text or texts; three, mathematical laws at work in these two."
That is all very well, but their results are inconsistent and produce no discovery.
Nature and Discovery
Mr Vincent uses the Key he discovers, applying it to known formulae and the text of the Book of the Law, itself, to demonstrate that the results are integral. He explains, for instance:
“The book’s technical title is Liber AL vel Legis, sub figura CCXX. It contains 220 verses, which fact was given as the reason for its numeration as CCXX in Roman Numerals. We are now able to verify that “The Law” has a key of 220 in the English Key though the Authors at the Time could not know this. Qabalistically then, “The Book of the Law” can be transliterated as “The Book of 220” which coincides with its technical name: Liber CCXX which we confirm through Gematria: The Law = (98+7+1) + (50+4+60) = 220”
- Vincent, Samuel K. (2008)
The Book of the Law is said to have been “delivered” by 418 to DCLXVI
We learn that the author of the Book calls Himself AIWAZ and provides the Key of this Name as 418. We see that the English Key confirms this as AIWAZ = 4 + 4 + 400 + 4 + 6 = 418.
These details are interesting because it predates the discovery of the key by over a century, and suggests that the Author had Knowledge the Scribe did not possess, and is the first indication of the evidence to be found within its pages of the praeterhuman origin of the Key and the Intelligent Design of these Historic Events.
Mr. Vincent writes,
“Also note, that the book is declared as “given by 418 to DCLXVI” which is 666 in Roman numerals, and that this coincides with the birth name of the scribe, though he was not at the time in possession of the Key, and sought in vain to confirm this attribution, transliterating to Greek and Hebrew. Finally, the scribe’s Name under the ordinance of that Order (Perdurabo), equates not only with his birth name, but also with that of the God presiding over the Book.”
Vincent, Samuel K. (2008)
By applying the New Aeon mappings that he's found Mr. Vincent, is able to confirm these equalities for Edward Alexander Crowley (the legal birth name of the scribe) = Alastair Crowley (A variant of his name used to publish his literary works) = 666 in the English Key; while Aleister Crowley translates to 440 + 220 that is Knowledge (or Horus) + The Law.
Alastair Crowley = Edward Alexander Crowley = 666= S36
Edward = 1 + 8 + 60 + 4 + 9 + 8 = 90
Alexander = 4 + 50 + 1 + 9 + 4 + 70 + 8 + 1 + 9 = 156
Alastair = 4 + 70 + 4 + 131 + 4 + 4 + 9 = 226 = Edward Alexander Crowley = 30 + 9 + 200 + 60 + 50 + 1 + 70 = 420
and
Perdurabo = Crowley = Horus = 440 (“The Law” into Chokmah i.e. 220 x 2), a number of perfection already experientally dear to Thelemites: and here they have their confirmation.
As regards, Aiwass, Mr. Vincent is able to confirm the old Aeon values, and provide further insight as to the New Aeon manifestations of the same. He writes:
“As already noted, AIWAZ with W activated is 418, the glyph for the Great Work accomplished coinciding with the enumeration of the same name in the Greek key. But taking w=60, AIWASS or AIWAZ, we find that AIWAZ sums to 78 and AIWASS to 156 in the new key, providing us with a further clue as to the interpretations and the scale of geometries we wish to apply. As AIWAZ, He is 78 or that current into Kether or the first sphere of emanation. When manifest as AIWASS, He is 78 × 2 or 156 which is the number for KAOS and BABALON in the English key and is the same current into the second sphere of manifestation, the Intelligible Word, Chokmah. Observe also that this transition from the closed Z termination of the first variant of the name, into the prolonged double S in the second and the accompanying phonetic changes (the sound of steam escaping) acts as a further hint of the nature of this Change.
Vincent, Samuel K. (2008)
Note that according to this system,
K A O S = 156 = B A B A L O N
30 + 4 + 80 + 42 = 156 = 6 + 4 + 6 + 4 + 50 + 80 + 6
Stratton-Kent describes his discovery as follows:
“When I first had my attention drawn to the existence of a purported English Qabala, my first reaction as a qabalist was to use it on this meaningless string of digits and characters. I converted all the letters into their numerical equivalents in the E.Q., and added them to the numbers in the series.”
“There are seventeen numbers and letters in the first line and eleven in the second ... but in the manuscript the 'X' at the beginning of line two looks like a multiplication symbol, so I made this calculation; 17x11=187, the numerical value of the phrase ENGLISH ALPHABET.”
Stratton-Kent (March 1988)
Congratulations Mr. Vincent I believe the evidence speaks for itself. We can finally put this English Key business to rest, and all the charlatans like Lees, Kent and others with it.
